Route description

Illinois 171 follows Cumberland Avenue from Chicago southward, as it briefly enters the O'Hare community area listed as 8400 West in the Chicago address system. It then becomes 1st Avenue until it crosses the Cal-Sag Channel, Illinois and Michigan Canal, and Des Plaines River. It then follows Archer Avenue and parallels the river along the eastern bank until it terminates in Joliet. Illinois Route 53 parallels Illinois 171 along the Western Bank of the river from Lockport until it ends in Joliet.

Route 171 is the main north–south connector, passing locations such as the Brookfield Zoo, various hospitals, and Sportsman's Park, one of Chicago's horse racing venues.

History

SBI Route 171 was established in 1924, and ran from Thomson to Illinois Route 78, along what is now called the Argo-Fay Route. In 1946, the modern Illinois 171 was designated from Lyons at U.S. Route 34 to Summit. This route was then extended twice; south to Joliet in 1968 to replace Illinois Route 4A and north to Illinois Route 72 at the Chicago/Park Ridge border in 1998 to yield the current route.[1]
